Out of Stuttgart: My Mother’s Journey, reveals the lives of two families and the decisions they made to carry on their lives for their own survival. Most of all, it was my mother’s passion and determination for the life she wanted that inspired me to share the story of our family.

About the book,
Out of Stuttgart: My Mother’s Journey

My mother, Lisa Sofie Einstein took this picture of the nameplate on her father, Dr. Otto Einstein’s medical office on April 1, 1933. This was the day that the Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses and professionals began in pre-war Nazi Germany. The photo inspired me to write this book about our family.

About Judith

I’m a former archivist and research librarian, cousin of Albert Einstein, and the author of the forthcoming book Out of Stuttgart: My Mother’s Journey. The memoir focuses on the dynamics of both sides of my family—the Samuels, with origins in Ukraine’s Pale of Settlement, and the Einsteins, from Stuttgart, southwest Germany. The book includes never-before-published stories drawn from Albert Einstein's life as well as from the wealth of material in the archive of photographs, correspondence, and journals I inherited from my mother, Lisa Sofie (Einstein) Samuel.  I received my Master in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, a Master of Art in Folklore and Mythology from UCLA, and a Master of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University. I am a former member of the Lifelong-Information-Literacy (LILI) group of academic librarians and a former member of the affiliated Diversity in Academic Libraries (DIAL) group.

Born in South Wales, Great Britain, I have made my home in New York, London, and Jerusalem, and currently live in Santa Monica, California.
